Reading/Leeds Boss: GNR Must Pay Any Curfew Breach Fine

Festival Republic managing director Melvin Benn tells Billboard.biz “it’s been another good year” for his events. As he looks back over a strong U.K. festival season, he makes Axl Rose‘s antics at Reading and Leeds Festivals sound like nothing more than a little local difficulty.

However, the approximate 20-minute overrun in breach of the 11pm curfew by GNR at Leeds Festival on Aug. 29 could cost Axl Rose and co £20,000 ($31,000) – or £1,000 ($1,539) for each minute.

A quick recap: Guns N’ Roses went on an hour late, at 10.30pm, at Reading Festival (Aug. 27) and protested when the sound was cut at midnight. The curfew was 11.30pm but Benn had secured an extra 30 minutes from the licensing authority, so no fine will be payable.

The band went on 30 minutes late in Leeds, but there was no such deal to extend the curfew. Rose has since taken to Twitter to make various claims, but Benn is clear that they should have finished at 11pm. He took the decision to let them play on, but today (Sept. 1) he confirms that Axl Rose may have to pay for his tardiness.

“There will probably be a fine to pay, it’s not determined yet,” says Benn. “The consequences are probably greater for Guns N’ Roses than they are for me.”

He confirms that any fine payable to Leeds’ licensing authority will be approximately £20,000 and will be deducted from GNR’s fee.

“I’m very bored about it because Guns N’ Roses were just one of 236 acts that played at both Reading and Leeds, and quite frankly every [act] is as valuable to me as any other,” he adds. “When you think of the other performances that actually did just bring amazing delight without any stupidity, people like Blink [182], Arcade Fire and the Libertines… all the bands that are starting out on the Introducing Stage, and Pendulum, Klaxons and Mumford & Sons. It has become a bit boring focusing on the antics of Axl Rose, really.”

Rose’s behavior has certainly become predictable, and may deter festival promoters from booking them in future.

Last night (Sept. 1) Guns N’ Roses also went on late – reports suggest at least one hour – at Dublin O2 Arena. Fans showed their frustration by throwing plastic bottles, which prompted the band to walk off after 20 minutes. They were persuaded to return an hour later and the show finally ended at 1am. Promoter MCD apologized to fans for the late finish.

Benn says Reading and Leeds sold out as quickly this year as in 2009 and confirms that he hopes to increase the capacity of Leeds from 70,000 to 80,000 next year. Reading’s capacity will remain at 87,000.

Sony Confirms Cloud-based Music Service

Sony Electronics introduced a new digital music service called Music Unlimited during a presentation at the IFA technology conference in Germany today.

The service is part of the company’s new Qriocity (pronounced “curiosity”) entertainment network, which also includes video, games and e-books. It’s a cloud-based music service that will allow streaming access to “millions” of songs. It initially will be available on Sony’s Bravia line of TVs and Blu-ray players, as well as via the PlayStation3 videogame console and Vaio computers.

However Sony did not provide any further details about the impending service, such as price, features or availability. The only information provided is that the music service will launch “later this year.” There was also no mention of access to the service from portable devices.

Rumors of the announcement began yesterday after a report from the Financial Times. Much of the press coverage positioned Sony’s music play as a “rival to iTunes” but that’s hardly a fair comparison given Apple’s dominance in the digital music space.

If anything, it’s a response to Microsoft and the Xbox 360. At the E3 conference this June, Microsoft added the ability for Zune Pass subscribers to stream their music directly through their Xbox game consoles.

But without a portable option, it’s unlikely that Sony will get much traction for a music subscription service. A full critique of Sony’s plans will have to wait until all the details are made available.

Apple’s Ping Music Social Network Starts With 160 Million Users

During their event today in San Francisco, Apple announced iTunes 10, the latest version of their music software. But they also introduced a big new feature in the app — Ping: a social network for music.

It’s like “Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes,” Jobs says. “But it’s not Facebook, it’s not Twitter,” Jobs is quick to note — “it’s a social network all about music.” And guess what? It has 160 million users in 23 countries built in right away (Apple will presumably be opening it up to other iTunes users later). And it’s available on your iPhone and iPod touch — right in the iTunes Store.

Jobs notes that this feature is all about discovery. You can follow both artists and your friends. And you can be followed. With it, you get custom song and album charts to discover new music. And you can post your thoughts and opinions about your favorite music. Plus, there are 17,000 concert listing in the network.

Last.fm, MySpace Music, etc. — look out. Oh, and another Apple competitor has been doing something similar for a while — Microsoft with Zune. But again, 160 million users out of the box.

Ping is available as a part of iTunes 10 — which is available today.

iTunes 10 Features New Logo And Social Media Sharing Service, Ping

Like Siamese twins, the iPod and iTunes go hand-in-hand. This week’s iPod update, then brought a whole new version of iTunes, v10, with a new logo and a few new features.

The new icon abandons the old CD imagery and replaces it with a bulbous double-clef note in a blue circle. The features include music clean-up – select five or so songs from the same album and it automatically finds art and titles – and there is a new discovery feature with social aspects called Ping.

Ping allows you to share with your friends what you’re listening to and even share information on concerts and events. It includes a custom “Top 10″ list and artists and listeners each have “profiles” that consist of interesting news and selections from that user’s library. It is true social music discovery.

Profiles can be public or private and you can limit access to a certain “circle of friends.” Ping is available now to all iTunes users and allows for multiple forms of sharing including image and link posting.

Live Nation To Power Concert Listings, Ticket Sales In iTunes 10

In case you were wondering: Live Nation and sister company Ticketmaster have jointly announced that they’ll be the ones powering the concert listings feature on iTunes 10.

In addition, the company said it will deliver a “way for millions of iTunes users to purchase concert tickets at Livenation.com and Ticketmaster.com“.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Steve Jobs left that part out of his keynote, although the official press release does mention Live Nation briefly, indicating only that the company will be providing tour info for Concert pages.

Says Michael Rapino, President and CEO of Live Nation Entertainment:

Our partnership with Apple is a key part of our strategy to empower fans with the greatest access to live entertainment.

So there you have it. It’s not just a new logo and a feature-poor social network, folks.

For what it’s worth: Live Nation Entertainment is a logical partner if only because of its sheer size (for better or worse). In 2009, the company said it sold a grand total of 140 million tickets, promoted 21,000 concerts, partnered with 850 sponsors and averaged 25 million unique monthly users of its e-commerce sites.

Ticketmaster, obviously, is one of the largest e-commerce and ticketing sites on the Web, with operations in 18 markets worldwide.

LA Sued For Stopping Tiesto Show

Organizers of a Los Angeles rave that ended with the death of a 15-year-old girl are suing the city for canceling a concert it organized with electronic music artist Tiesto.

Insomniac Inc. filed the breach-of-contract lawsuit Friday (Aug. 27) against the city for canceling an October concert at the Convention Center. The lawsuit seeks a court order allowing the concert to go on.

The city attorney’s office said it is reviewing the lawsuit and would not comment.

Insomniac organized the Electric Daisy Carnival in June. The two-day stadium event was marred by the girl’s death from a suspected drug overdose and 118 arrests, mostly for drug possession.

But Insomniac says the Tiesto concert would be indoors and limited to adults.

Songkick Lands Partnerships With YouTube, Vevo

Songkick has launched content partnerships with YouTube and Vevo, co-founder and CEO Ian Hogarth exclusively revealed to Billboard. These and other content syndication deals are helping to make the young London-based company a player in online concert information.

As of this week, visitors to YouTube’s music portal (YouTube.com/music) will see a Songkick-powered list of concerts in the “Events Near You” section on the right side of the page. The list is based on the location of the visitors.Hogarth hinted more integration at YouTube may be on the way but did not share details.

The Vevo partnership was soft-launched last month. Songkick concert listings will be added to both artist, says Hogart. Video pages will also have concert information. Currently, the Vevo page for Lady Gaga, for example, has “buy concert tickets” link and the “on tour” banner (on Lady Gaga photo) that both take the user to Songkick. On the page for Justin Bieber’s “One Time” there is also an “on tour” box with links to back to the site.

“From our point of view, this is one step closer to making it incredibly easy to find local concerts, whether you’re on Songkick or on another site discovering music,” says Hogarth, adding that these deals came from a mutual desire to create a better experience for music fans.

“So far it seems really good,” he says. “It’s kind of early days, but it seems like a very significant number of people are coming through, finding out more about the show, buying tickets, etc.”

The three-year-old, London-based company is picking up momentum these days. Songkick currently has 1.3 million concert goers per month, says Hogarth. Concert data is gathered daily from over 100 ticket sites around the world and is augmented by the contributions of Songkick users.

The company also has content partnerships with The Hype Machine, Songbird, We Are Hunted, Grooveshark, Nokia and BBC. In addition, Songkick has made its first U.S. hire. Caren Kelleher, formerly of Paste Magazine and Sony Music, will head the company’s U.S. business development.
